Tore a page of my heart...

I love books and here are my answers to questions about them. I think I'll take a page from SJ and make Sunday meme day unless by some miracle my life gets less boring.

Book Meme
Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror?
Horror. I only prefer fantasy if Neil Gaiman is writing it. I also like Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. So I guess I like all of them.

Hardback or Trade Paperback or Mass Market Paperback?
Hardback, but until I have a new job MMPaper. Trades are an awkward size, but I generally like their cover art.

Amazon or Brick and Mortar?
Usually brick and mortar, but lately the stuff I look for is easier to get through Amazon

Barnes & Noble or Borders?
B&N. They know me by name.

Hitchhiker or Discworld?
Hitchhiker. I did love the book Terry Pratchett wrote with Neil Gaimen, Good Omens.

Bookmark or Dogear?
Bookmark. Dogear my books and I will kill you.

Magazine: Asimov’s Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
Entertainment Weekly.

Alphabetize by author, Alphabetize by title, or random?
Author, then by title by that author.

Keep, Throw Away or Sell?
Keep!

Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Keep.

Read with dustjacket or remove it?
Remove it.

Short story or novel?
Novels, except Clive Barker. I love love love his Books of Blood series, which reminds me, I need to rebuy them.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
This is hard. I love The Harry Potter series. I think it’s imaginative, well written, and I think it’s cool how it’s made reading fun. I have to go with Lemony Snicket for this though. The humor is twisted and wonderful, making ti perfect for me.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Chapter breaks, but only if it’s not a great book. I’ve been known to read a book straight through before, bedtime be damned.

“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
I like “Once upon a time, on a dark and stormy nigh...”

Buy or Borrow?
Buy. I lost 10 library books in my fire and feel bad that I cost someone else borrowing them.

Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
I buy based on author loyalty, and recommendations.

Lewis or Tolkien?
Lewis! I was able to read both series, but the edge goes to Lewis because I couldn’t get through The Hobbit.

Collection (short stories by the same author) or Anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Collection. I like to know the quality of what I’m getting and with collections you’re pretty safe.

Tidy ending or Cliffhanger?
Tidy ending. I still obsess over what happened Monday morning in The Breakfast Club.

Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?
Night, always.

Standalone or Series?
I prefer standalone because I don’t want to wait 2 years for the next installment. Of course, my motto is “Instant gratification takes too long.”

New or used?
New unless I can't get it that way.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
God Shaped Hole by Tiffanie DeBartolo

Top 5 favorite genre books of all time?

The Bad Beginning (Lemony Snicket) I read it all in one sitting and bought every following edition the day it came out.
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban (JK Rowling) I’ll never forgive JK for what eventually happens to Sirius.
Interview with a Vampire (Ann Rice) Of course as a black wearing, ‘Cure’ listening, Bauhaus seeing in concert type person I love this book.
Different Seasons (Stephen King) He’s not the best writer ever, but his imagination is incrediable.
American Gods (Neil Gaimen) Love Neil and will buy anything he puts out.

Favorite genre series?
Lemony Snicket all the way.

Currently Reading?
I’m embarrassed, but ‘Valley of the Dolls’ by Jacqueline Susann. I never claimed to not have guilty pleasures.

"Neil says hi, by the way".....

The only reason I knew of Neil Gaiman was thanks to Tori Amos, and I am so glad for it...I love him!

I totally refused to read Harry Potter but then devoured Lemony Snicket....go figure.

Hilly- The reason I know Neil is because 'The Sandman' is required reading if you're going to wear black in Oklahoma. ;-)

I find Lemony Snicket to be snarkier than Harry Potter, which is why I love it so much more.

How could you not resist characters named Klaus, Sunny and Violet Baudelaire?

SJD said...

Hey, I did the Six meme today! I think I might use this one next Sunday.

And by the way, Claire walked right past Brian on Monday, without even acknowledging his existence. Allison faked sick and stayed home.

FrancesDanger said...

Quiche- I love the books because the author always describes what Sunny means when she says babytalk. That's simply awesome.

SJ- I know, I know. There's absolutely no way they were all friends on Monday, but there's a part of my bruised, still teenaged heart that wants to believe in happily ever after.

I have not read anything by Neil Gaiman. *gasp*

I heard about NG recently when reading reviews for Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box.

Joe Hill is Stephen King's son. (I'm probably the last person alive to discover this fact.)

FrancesDanger said...

Heather- I didn't know Joe Hill was Stephen King's son. Wow. I'll have to check him out.

I highly recommend Neil Gaiman. He's an engaging and imaginative writer who I think you'll enjoy.

Kevin- Go for it! I'd love to see some of your answers as it seems like we have the same taste.

I'm stealing it too.

Quiche- I thought you might. I know you have a love of books.
